DAISY is an acronym for Digital, Accessible, Information System. The original concept for DAISY was born from the need for accessible audio that could be used by individuals unable to read print, as easily and efficiently as a sighted person uses a print book. It has a number of important capabilities. It provides synchronised text and audio. Text can be highlighted for the reader at the same time as audio is being played, and text size can be varied. It provides a navigation structure for a book or document that enables the reader to easily move between chapters, pages and paragraphs. Daisy files can be 'read' using software on a computer, daisy player devices or using MP3 players.
Daisy Talking Books provide an excellent and fun method of reading for both pupils who are unable to read standard text in books and those who will benefit from the combined experience of seeing and hearing words at the same time. - Can the technology really provide all the materials the pupils need?
